Let’s now understand the subject-wise changes in the CBSE Class 9 syllabus.

Subject-Wise Analysis of the New Revised Syllabus

  1. Mathematics

One of the biggest changes in the CBSE Class 9 Mathematics syllabus is the increase in the number of chapters from 12 to 15.

This does not necessarily increase workload. Instead, it introduces advanced concepts earlier so students can build a stronger mathematical foundation.

Several topics that were earlier taught in higher classes have now been introduced in Class 9.

Examples include:

• Arithmetic Progression (earlier in Class 10)

• Areas Related to Circles (Class 10)

• Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables (Class 10)

• Geometric Progression (previously taught in Class 11)

Another structural change is that the chapter Polynomials has now been divided into two separate chapters to allow deeper understanding of the topic.

  • Two-Level Assessment System in Mathematics

To support different learning paths, NCERT has introduced a two-level assessment system.

  • Proficiency Level

This level is mandatory for all students and ensures a strong foundational understanding of mathematical concepts.

  • Advanced Level

This optional level is designed for students who want to pursue higher studies in mathematics or engineering fields.

NCERT is currently developing new textbooks that will support both levels of assessment.

  • Struggling with Advanced Mathematics Topics?

Many students find concepts like AP, GP, and linear equations difficult when introduced early.

At Real Academy, we focus on step-by-step conceptual understanding so students develop confidence in mathematics from the beginning.

  1. Science

In the revised CBSE Class 9 Science syllabus, the number of chapters has been reduced from 12 to 11.

However, the focus has shifted toward application-based learning and deeper conceptual understanding rather than memorization.

Let’s look at the changes in each branch of science.

Physics

The Gravitation chapter has been removed from the Physics section.

However, the chapter “Work and Energy” has been expanded and renamed “Work, Energy and Simple Machines.”

Students will now learn practical mechanical concepts such as:

• Pulleys

• Inclined planes

• Levers

These additions help students understand how physics concepts work in real-world situations.

Chemistry

In Chemistry, the number of chapters has been reduced from four to three.

The introductory chapter “Matter in Our Surroundings” has been removed from the Class 9 syllabus.

The remaining chapters will focus more on conceptual chemical understanding rather than basic definitions.

Biology

The Biology section has increased from three to four chapters.

Although the chapter “Improvement in Food Resources” has been removed, two new chapters have been introduced:

• Reproduction

• Diversity

Existing chapters such as Cell and Tissue have also been updated to include modern biological concepts.

  1. Social Science

The Social Science syllabus has been significantly restructured, with the number of chapters reduced from 20 to 16.

However, the updated content includes both ancient historical knowledge and modern analytical topics.

History

The revised History syllabus now begins with Early Human History and covers developments up to 1200 CE.

Interestingly, some topics that were previously included in Class 12,

such as:

• Harappan Civilization

• Bhakti Traditions

are now part of the Class 9 curriculum.

Geography

Several advanced topics that were earlier taught in Class 11 Geography are now included in Class 9.

These include:

• Plate tectonics

• Interior structure of the Earth

• Ocean relief

• Biome distribution

These changes help students build a strong understanding of Earth’s physical systems early in their academic journey.

Political Science

Students will now study advanced civic concepts such as:

• Justice

• Authority

• Elections

These topics help develop civic awareness and understanding of democratic systems.

Economics

Economics now includes practical financial literacy topics, helping students understand real-world financial concepts.

New topics include:

• Budgeting

• Income tax basics

• Investment options

These additions prepare students for real-life financial decision-making.

  1. English

The CBSE Class 9 English syllabus has undergone major changes.

The previous textbooks Beehive and Moments have been replaced with a new book titled “Kaveri.”

This book introduces new stories and poems designed to improve comprehension and literary appreciation.

Updated Writing Skills Section

The writing section now includes modern academic writing skills such as:

• Persuasive essays

• Literary analysis

• Research writing

• Creative writing

These additions aim to strengthen students’ critical thinking and communication skills.

What These Changes Mean for Students

The new syllabus of CBSE Class 9 for the academic session 2026-27 strongly moves towards a more concept-based approach to knowledge dissemination.

Students are now expected to:

• Understand concepts deeply

• Apply knowledge in real situations

• Develop analytical thinking skills

• Prepare early for Class 10 board exams

The Study strategy adopted in the initial months of Class 9 must continue to ensure better results in the future.

Introducing new concepts at an early stage, at the same time providing practical exposure, CBSE & NCERT aspires to equip our students for upcoming academic and professional competitions.
